Abstract

A sizing composition for application to glass fibres during the formation thereof comprises an aqueous emulsion of a resinous film-forming agent, such as polybutyl methacrylate, polystyrene, styrene-butadiene copolymer, polyvinyl pyridine, polyvinyl butyral and polyvinyl acetate, held in a dispersed condition by a wetting agent of cationic character stable through a pH range of 2 to 8 and capable of air drying to a continuous film, a lubricant which is compatible with the film-forming agent and selected from monobasic fatty acid amines, dibasic acid amides and imidazoline derivatives which have been solubilized with low molecular weight fatty acids, high molecular weight ester type monomers and ester type plasticizers for the film forming agent, and a deionized vinyl silanol in which the average number of organo groups attached to each silicon atom is from 0.8 to 1.5 made by the deionization of a vinyl siliconate of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. The vinyl silanol dispersion is preferably produced as described in Specification 746,037, or by treating a neutralized siliconate solution as disclosed in Specification 746,038 to successive or simultaneous treatment with anionic and cationic exchange resins. Lubricants specified are amides of pelargonic acid and tetraethylene pentamine solubilized with acetic acid, amides of stearic acid or caproic acid reacted with tetraethylene pentamine, imidazoline derivatives solubilized with acetic acid, diethyl sulphate or benzyl chloride, diallyl phthalate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, diamyl, dibutyl, dicarbitol, dibutoxyglycol or dimethoxyglycol phthalate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycolate, methyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate, triglycol di-2-ethylbutyrate, triglycol di-2-ethylhexoate, tricresyl or triphenyl phosphate, a product prepared by condensing ethylene oxide with a hydrophobic base formed by the condensation of propylene oxide with propylene glycol, methoxyethyloleate, or an ester of azelaic or pelargonic acid.ALSO:Glass fibres are sized by application during the formation thereof of an aqueous emulsion of a resinous filmforming agent, such as polybutyl methacrylate, polystyrene, styrene-butadiene copolymer, polyvinyl pyridine, polyvinyl butyral and polyvinyl acetate, held in a dispersed condition by a wetting agent of cationic character stable through a pH range of 2 to 8 and capable of air drying to a continuous film, a lubricant which is compatible with the film-forming agent and selected from monobasic fatty acid amides, dibasic acid amides and imidazoline derivatives which have been solubilized with low molecular weight fatty acids, high molecular weight ester type monomers and ester type plasticizers for the film forming agent, and a deionized vinyl silanol in which the average number of organo groups attached to each silicon atom is from 0.8 to 1.5 made by the deionization of a vinyl siliconate of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. The vinyl silanol dispersion is preferably produced as described in Specification 746,037 [Group IV(a)], or by treating a neutralized siliconate solution as disclosed in Specification 746,038 [Group IV(a)], to successive or simultaneous treatment with anionic and cationic exchange resins. Lubricants specified are amides of pelargonic acid and tetraethylene pentamine solubilized with acetic acid, amides of stearic acid or caproic acid reacted with tetraethylene pentamine, imidazoline derivatives solubilized with acetic acid, diethyl sulphate or benzyl chloride, diallyl phthalate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, diamyl, dibutyl, dicarbitol, dibutoxyglycol or dimethoxyglycol phthalate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycolate, methyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate, triglycol di-2-ethylbutyrate, triglycol di-2-ethylhexoate, tricresyl or triphenyl phosphate, a product prepared by condensing ethylene oxide with a hydrophobic base formed by the condensation of propylene oxide with propylene glycol. methoxy-ethyloleate, or an ester of azelaic or pelargonic acid.
