Abstract

An adhesive comprises (1) a chemical adduct of maleic anhydride and a rubbery copolymer of a major amount of isobutylene and a minor amount of a conjugated diene (e.g. isoprene, butadiene, piperylene or 2,3-dimethylbutadiene) (see Specification 765,833), and (2) a cashew nut shell oil modified phenol-aldehyde resin. The adhesives are used for bonding elastomers to fabrics. In an example an adhesive comprising an adduct of maleic anhydride with GR-I-15 (a 98:2 isobutylene:isoprene copolymer), a cashew nut shell oil modified phenol-formaldehyde resin, carbon black, a p-octyl phenol formaldehyde resin and toluene is coated on nylon tyre cord which was then bonded to an unvulcanized butyl stock and vulcanization effected.ALSO:Elastomers are bonded to textile materials by means of an adhesive comprising (i) a chemical adduct of maleic anhydride and a rubbery copolymer of a major amount of isobutylene and a minor amount of a conjugated diene (see Specification 765,833 [Group IV(a)]), and (2) a cashew nut shell oil modified phenol-aldehyde resin. In an example an adhesive comprising an adduct of maleic anhydride with GR-I-15 (a 98 : 2 isobutylene isoprene copolymer), a cashew nut shell oil modified phenolformaldehyde resin, carbon black, a p-octyl phenol/formaldehyde resole and toluene is coated on a nylon tyre cord which was then bonded to an unvulcanized Butyl stock and vulcanization effected.
