Abstract
A solid homopolymer of a 2 to 4 carbon atom perfluorochloroolefin or copolymer thereof with another fluorine-containing olefin is separated from the corresponding monomer by introducing a mixture of polymer and monomer produced by a polymerization process into a tubular drying zone under conditions such that liquid monomer is vaporized and solid polymer is discharged from the tubular drying zone in admixture with vaporous monomer and is recovered therefrom. The tubular drying zone is preferably maintained at a temperature between 60 DEG and 250 DEG C. and conditions adjusted so that the outlet velocity is above 50 feet per second and below 300 feet per second. The perfluorochloroolefin may be trifluorochloroethylene, difluorodichloroethylene, or 2,3-dichloroperfluorobutene (CF3CClCClCF3) and the fluorine-containing olefin may be perfluorobutadiene, vinylidene fluoride, difluoroethylene, trifluoroethylene, perfluorostyrene, perfluorocyclobutene or phenyl trifluoroethylene. A continuous polymerization process is described, using as catalyst trichloroacetyl, benzoyl, trifluoroacetyl, difluorochloroacetyl, chloroacetyl or dichlorofluoroacetyl peroxide.ALSO:Trifluorochloroethylene is prepared by a continuous process in which trifluorotrichloroethane is treated with a slurry of zinc, tin, manganese, magnesium or iron in a solvent such as methanol, ethanol, butanol, propanol, glycerol or dioxane.
