766,425. Angular bending; welding by pressure; rolling; shearing. HUTTENWERKE ILSEDE-PEINE AKT..GES. March 22, 1955 [March 23, 1954], No. 8313/55. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for interconnecting bars end-to-end by welding means, to which the bars are fed in succession and from which continuous bar in curved or zig-zag form is withdrawn, includes one or more bending devices provided before the welding means which bend the bars prior to welding to allow the zig-zag welded bar to be withdrawn continuously from the welding means. Rolled bars 2 from a furnace or rolling means 1 are fed to a bending device 5, successive bars being separated by means 3, which device 5 moves to bend the bar into the shape indicated at 6 or to other shape, Fig. 2 (not shown). The bending device 5 then returns to its original position and the bent bar 6 is fed by a device 9 to a welding unit 10 which welds adjacent ends of successive bars together to form a continuous bar 11 in zig-zag form. The ends of the bars 6 to be welded may be preheated by an autogenous heater or induction coil 8. Welding burrs are removed by means 12. The zig-zag bar 11 is fed by the means 9 to a furnace 13 to pass therefrom through a straightening device 14 to rolling means 17, a shearing device 15 beyond the straightening device 14 being arranged to operate if damage occurs. The ends of the bars 2 may be formed as in Fig. 3 for welding.
