Abstract

765,897. Proofing against chemicals; treating wood; resin-impregnated paper. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Nov. 30, 1954 [Jan. 25, 1954], No. 34719/54. Classes 96 and 140. A method of resinifying a solid porous body comprises permeating the body with a gaseous strongly basic nitrogen compound, impregnating the body, containing the basic nitrogen compound, with a non-resinous liquid mixture containing an aldehyde and another constituent or other constituents and capable of undergoing a chemical condensation reaction in the presence of the basic nitrogen compound as a condensation catalyst to form a solid resin, and maintaining the impregnated solid porous body at a reaction temperature until a resin is formed therein. The treatment renders the bodies resistant to chemicals, e.g. acid solutions and acid fumes. Specified basic nitrogen compounds are ammonia, methylamine and dimethylamine, which may be used in admixture with inert gases or vapours such as nitrogen or water vapour. Specified resin-forming liquids are solutions of phenol, cresol, chlorophenol and urea together with formaldehyde; of furfuraldehyde and phenol; and of furfuryl alcohol, phenol and formaldehyde. The solvent may be water, methanol or ethanol. Specified solid porous bodies are wood, paper, cardboard, concrete and bricks. Prior to the application of the basic gaseous nitrogen compound, air may be removed from the solid porous body. Impregnation with the basic gaseous nitrogen compound and the resin-forming liquid may be carried out under pressure. The body, impregnated with the resin-forming liquid, may be maintained under pressure with air, nitrogen or other inert gas during the resin-forming reaction and may also be heated. Examples describe the treatment of wood with gaseous ammonia and an aqueous solution of phenol and formaldehyde. Wooden fan propeller blades so resinified are resistant to hydrogen chloride fumes.
