Abstract
765,863. Electric motor wheels. LETOURNEAU, Inc., R. G. Aug. 15, 1951 [Aug. 23, 1950], No. 19240/51. Classes 79(2) and 79(3). [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXIV] A steerable vehicle wheel 2 is mounted by bearings 9 on an extension 10 of the frame 28 of a driving electric motor associated with an electromagnetic brake 38 and is driven through helically - toothed reduction gearing. A helical ring gear 8 attached to the wheel 2 is engaged by pinions 166 on two countershafts 135 (only one of which is shown), a driving pinion 85 being mounted on a long motor shaft 39 so that it floats between the countershaft gears 162. The outer bearings 161 of the countershafts are adjustable to provide, through the helical engagement 166-8, angular adjustment of the gears 162 to swing the shaft 39 to a central position. The countershafts 135 are mounted between interconnected front and rear plates 121, 122, the plate 122 being splined on the extension 10 and clamped by a nut 145 which has teeth engageable by a wrench 148. The plate 121 has diametrically-opposed threaded openings adjustably receiving the bearings 161 and after adjustment to centre the shaft 39 each bearing is locked by clamping together a split portion of the plate 121. A jig, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown), may be bolted to the plate 121 to indicate the central position of the shaft 39. The brake 38 comprises interleaved discs splined alternately to a hub 48 on the shaft 39 and a drum 40 fixed to the motor frame 28. A plate 53 of magnetic material is normally urged by springs 54 to press the brake discs against an adjustable ring 44 and engage the brake, but is retracted by a series of magnetic coils to release the brake when the motor is energized. The ring 44 is locked in adjusted position by a tapered stud engaging a split portion of the ring. The brake end of the shaft 39 is splined to the rotor 72 of the motor, and has a tapered ridge which is pulled against the splines by a nut 83. The armature coils 70 are supplied through a commutator 69 engaging a brush unit, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), on a fibre disc 66. The plates 121, 122 may be so oriented that both wheels 162 dip into oil in the case 89. The motor frame 28 is supported on a vehicle by ball joints B held between bolted-together socket halves, and brackets (not shown) on the frame 28 provide means for steering. A pneumatic tyre is retained on the wheel 2 by a removable rim 4 held by a locking ring, and by a rim 3 held against a welded bead so that it is removable after the rim 4 and the tyre have been removed. A flexible valve stem 18 is attached to the inner tube. The vehicle speed and power range may be varied by the use of different tyres, a variable speed D.C. motor, and a selective gear ratio, the gear ratio being changed, while using the same gears 162, by replacing the shafts 135 and the ring gear 8.
