Abstract

A coating composition consists essentially of (1) 100 parts (by weight) of an organopolysiloxane containing 75 to 100 mol. per cent, inclusive, of dimethylsiloxane units and up to 25 mol. per cent of siloxane units selected from diphenylsiloxane, phenylmethylsiloxane, methylvinylsiloxane and phenylvinylsiloxane units, the polysiloxane being soluble in benzene and having a viscosity of at least 500 cs. at 25 DEG C.; (2) 10 to 120 parts of calcium carbonate as filler; (3) 1 to 7 parts of a devolatilized liquid alkylpolysilicate in which the alkyl groups contain less than 5 carbon atoms each; and (4) 2 to 8 parts of an organoperoxide having at least 1 aromatic acyl group per molecule. Polysilicates specified are methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-primary butyl, secondary butyl, isobutyl and tertiary butyl polysilicates. Peroxides specified are benzoyl peroxide, tertiary butyl perbenzoate and dichloro- and monochloro-benzoyl peroxides. The components may be mixed in any order and the coating composition may be in the form of a paste or an organic solvent dispersion. Glass cloth or other base member can be coated by spraying, brushing, dipping or calendering and the coating thereafter vulcanized at 110 DEG to 150 DEG C. Superior coatings result when the siloxane, silicate and calcium carbonate are milled, e.g. at 250 DEG C. for 2 hours before milling with the peroxide, applying to the base member and vulcanizing.
