Class 98(2) Yellow styryl dye masking images to correct for unwanted blue absorption of magenta images in photographic layers produced by colour development of magenta couplers having active methylene groups, such as the 5-pyrazolones or cyanacetyl compounds, are made by reacting untransformed coupler with pyrrole, indole or carbazole aldehydes or functional, derivatives thereof such as the anils. Such aldehydes provide masking images whose absorption is more restricted to the blue part of the spectrum than masking images made similarly with aminobenzaldehydes and derivatives thereof. In Example 1 a multilayer film of conventional sensitivity sequence containing from the support (1) 1 - hydroxy - 2 - naphthoylamino - 2<SP>1</SP> - (methylheptadecylamino) - benzene - 5<SP>1</SP> - sulphonic acid as cyan coupler, (2) 1 -(4<SP>1</SP> - phenoxy - 3' - sulphophenyl) - 3 - hepta - decyl - 5 - pyrazolone as magenta coupler, and (3) p-stearylaminobenzoylacetanilide- 3':5'-dicarboxylic acid as yellow coupler is exposed, colour developed, rinsed, bathed in the m-methoxy-anil of #-indole-aldehyde-2-carboxylic acid, bleached, fixed and washed to give negative colour images with the yellow wash in the middle, magenta, layer. In Example 2 the m-dimethyl-amino-anil of N-ethyl-carbazole-3- aldehyde sulphonic acid replaces the anil of Example 1, and Example 3 uses, similarly, the m-hydroxy-anil of a-pyrrole aldehyde. Examples 4, 5 and 6 are for falsecolour materials in which uppermost unsensitized layers with unspecified pyrazolones as magenta colour formers are washed with the m-sulphanil of N-ethylcarbazole-3-aldehyde, a sulphanil of 1- methyl-2-phenyl-indole-3-aldehyde and the m-hydroxyanil of 2-4-diphenyl-pyrrole-5- aldehyde respectively; and Example 7 is for a somewhat false colour duplicate negative printed from black and white separation records in which the p-sulphanil of #-indole aldehyde produces a yellow wash in the magenta coloured layer.
