Abstract

765,082. Packaging. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 19, 1954 [Oct. 19, 1953], No. 30120/54. Class 94(1) [Also in Group XXXVI] Inter-reactive liquid or plastic components of a self-setting, resinous, insulating composition are enclosed in a flexible container and temporarily isolated from one another by an impervious barrier or barriers which can be removed or ruptured to allow mixing of the materials without opening the package. In one form, Fig. 2, the components are enclosed in compartments 26, 27 in a flexible plastic container 20 and separated by a diaphragm 23 which is bonded to the inner wall of the container or seated in a groove therein. The container is formed with a screwed neck 22 so that it may be applied to a cable joint (see Group XXXVI) as shown in Fig. 1, the diaphragm being ruptured or displaced and the components mixed by manipulation of the container before it is applied. In Fig. 4 the components 44, 45 are separated by a partition 43 in a flexible container 40 formed with a discharge nozzle 42 through which the contents may be extruded after mixing through an opening in the sheath 32 of a cable joint (see Group XXXVI) as shown in Fig. 3. The partition 43 may be formed by inter-reaction at the surfaces of the components, e.g. if the latter are epoxy resin and amine catalyst mixtures respectively. In Fig. 6, one component 68 is contained in an outer tube 61 formed with a discharge nozzle 62, and the other 67 in a weaker inner tube 64, the two tubes having a common end seal 66, and the other end of the tube 64 being closed by a seal 65. In Fig. 8, one component 89 is contained in a sealed outer tube 81 and the other 88 in an inner tube 84 closed at one end by a seal 85 and at the other by a removable external clamp 87. In Fig. 11, the components 107, 108 are enclosed between sheets 101, 102 of plastic film, sealed together at their edges and separated by a partition 104 of thinner or weaker film bonded to the inner surfaces of the sheets at 105, 106. In Fig. 13, the components 124, 125 are contained in inner and outer envelopes 122, 121 having a common end seal 123, the inner envelope being weaker or more completely filled than the outer envelope. In Fig. 15, an envelope 142, formed by edge-sealing strips of plastic film 143, 144, is folded to form two compartments containing the components 150 and 151 respectively, the folded edge being seated in a groove 148 in a member 147 by a separator 146 which is held in position by an outer container 141. When the assembly is removed from the outer container, the member 147 and separator 146 fall apart to allow the envelope to be manipulated to mix the components. Fig. 16 shows a further modification in which one component 167, together with small spherical containers 164, 165 enclosing another component or other components, are contained in a sealed envelope 161, the spherical container being rupturable by pressure applied through the outer envelope.
