Abstract

Bituminous plastisols are prepared by superficially treating pulverulent bituminous particles to reduce their ability to dissolve in a lubricating oil, and mixing with a lubricating oil which will dissolve them at elevated temperature but not normal temperature. Specified are asphaltic bitumen and coal tar pitch of a particle size 0,5 to 200 microns. The superficial treatment can be by extracting maltenes with solvents e.g. C3-10 aliphatic hydrocarbons, or by coating the particles with e.g. polyvinyl chloride or alcohol, silicone polymers and methacrylate polymers, or the material left after the maltene extraction of the bitumen, cellulose esters or ethers: "Vinsol" (Registered Trade Mark) or "Gilsonite" (Registered Trade Mark) may also be used for the coating. The particles are obtained by crushing; or atomising a melt into a gas or liquid immiscible with the bitumen; or by impregnating molten bitumen with bubbles of an inert gas and crushing or atomising the product. Before adding the oil the particles may be heated to form spheres and to close surface pores. Stabilizers, filters and pigments may be present. Articles are coated or impregnated by applying the plastisol and heating to coalesce the particles with the oil.
