763,666. Polymethylene-imines. FARBWERKE HOECHST AKT.-GES. VORM. MEISTER LUCIUS & BRUNING. Oct. 27, 1954 [Oct. 29, 1953], No. 31066/54. Class 2 (3). Polymethylene-imines are produced when a lactam, in vapour form, is passed together with hydrogen over a hydrogenation catalyst of copper, cadmium, or a mixture of both, between 200‹ and 350‹ C. and at atmospheric pressure, the resulting mixture being worked up in known manner. Suitable lactones are, for example, α- piperidone and α-pyrrolidone. In the examples (a) α-piperidone is evaporated and passed with hydrogen over a cadmium catalyst heated to 265‹ C. to give piperidine; (b) α-piperidone is evaporated and passed with hydrogen over a copper catalyst heated to 265‹ C. to give piperidine; (c) α-pyrrolidone is evaporated and passed with hydrogen over a cadmium catalyst to give pyrrolidine; and (d) α-piperidone is evaporated and passed with hydrogen over a copper-cadmium catalyst to give piperidine. Specification 535,023, [Group IV], is referred to.
