Abstract
763,156. Cooling treatment chambers. CUVIER, C. C. F. Nov. 18, 1954 [Dec. 24, 1953; March 15, 1954], No. 33399/54. Class 81(2) Cooling apparatus comprises a bag to receive the patient's body and a fan which circulates air in a closed circuit from refrigerating apparatus to the bag and back to the refrigerator. The bag 1 is made from flexible plastic material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene, and is provided with an airtight slide fastener 6 to enable the patient to be put into it. A circular fitting 7 having a band of sponge rubber is provided for closing the bag 1 about the neck of the patient. Airtightly closed ports 5 or airtight slide fasteners are provided to allow access to the patient. Metal rods 9 serve to stiffen the bag and springs 8 are affixed to the corners of the bag for hooking on the upper portions of a bed-frame. Air from a refrigerating and air-conditioning unit 2 enters the bag 1 by a conduit 3 and leaves by another conduit 4. The unit 2 houses a refrigerating unit 10 having an evaporator 11 and a thermostatic device 14 for controlling the degree of cooling. The air is sterilized by an ultra-violet ray tube 12, dried by calcium chloride in a receptacle 13 and circulated by a fan 15. Before passing to the fan 15, the air passes over an infrared ray emitter to destroy any ozone which may be produced by the ultra-violet ray tube 12. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the bag is formed from polyninyl chloride bed sheets supported by semi-cylindrical metal arches.
