Abstract

The invention comprises pyrimidine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0763120/IV(b)/1> wherein X is hydrogen or a C1-C6 alkyl group, Y is a C1-C6 alkyl group or X and Y together with the N atom form a heterocyclic ring, X1 is hydrogen or a C1-C6 alkyl group and Y1 is a C1-C6 alkyl group or X1 and Y1 together with the N atom form a heterocyclic ring. They are prepared by the reduction of the corresponding derivatives of general formula <FORM:0763120/IV(b)/2> wherein Ar is an aryl group which may be phenyl or naphthyl and may be substituted, e.g. by one or more alkoxy, alkyl, halogen or nitro radicals; such compounds are described in the parent Specification. In examples: (1) 2,4 - bismethylamino - 5 - p - chlorobenzeneazo-6-aminopyrimidine is reduced by hydrogen in the presence of Raney nickel to 2,4-bismethylamino - 5,6 - diaminopyrimidine; (2) 2-methylamino - 4 - chloro - 5 - p - chlorobenzeneazo - 6 - aminopyrimidine is reacted with dimethylamine and the 2-methylamino-4-dimethylamino - 5 - p - chlorobenzeneazo - 6 - aminopyrimidine formed reduced by hydrogen to 2-methylamino - 4 - dimethylamino - 5,6 - diaminopyrimidine; (3) 2 - dimethylamino - 4-methylamino - 5 - p - chlorobenzeneazo - 6-chloropyrimidine is converted with ammonia to 2 - dimethylamino - 4 - methylamino - 5 - p-chlorobenzeneazo - 6 - aminopyrimidine which is then reduced to 2-dimethylamino-4-methylamino - 5,6 - diaminopyrimidine; (4) by using the appropriate starting materials compounds of the general formula <FORM:0763120/IV(b)/3> are similarly prepared in which Z is dimethylamino, morpholino, piperidino, diethylamino, butylamino, isopropylamino, ethylamino and propylamino; (5) 6-amino-5-p-chlorobenzeneazo - 2 - diethylamino - 4 - methylaminopyrimidine is reduced to 5,6-diamino-2-diethylamino-4 - methylaminopyrimidine; and (6) 6 - chloro-2 - ethylamino - 4 - methylaminopyrimidine is coupled with p-chlorobenzenediazonium chloride and the product converted first to 6-amino-5 - p - chlorbenzeneazo - 2 - ethylaminopyrimidine and then reduced to 5,6-diamino-2-ethylamino-4-methylaminopyrimidine. According to the Provisional Specification the above defined alkyl groups may be replaced by any hydrocarbon radicals and the group NX1Y1 may be replaced by thiol or alkylthiol.
