Abstract

763,074. Aerials. SHARDLOW ELECTRIC WIRES, Ltd. JONES, P. and WRIGLEY, D. V. Feb. 4, 1955 [Nov. 13, 1953], No. 31498/53. Class 40(7) An aerial arrangement comprises a plurality of rod or like elements A secured in a central coupling member. The coupling member consists of a like plurality of sockets. for the reception of the ends of the elements, united with a common centre boss the whole coupling being made of a flexible protective material such as rubber in which are embedded conductive leads for connecting the elements mounted in the sockets with a feeder or with feeder terminals. As shown the centre boss part 5 carries two sockets 6 at the end of short strip or spoke parts 6a extending from diametrically opposite sides of the boss. Each socket may contain .a plug 11, 11a co-operating with a socket in the end of the corresponding rod although any other convenient form of coupling means can be used. The open end of the socket 6 is made to fit the rod tightly to form a weather tight seal. In a modification the aerial elements can be enclosed in skins of protective material which are then sealed on to the material of the socket 6 so that the whole aerial is provided with continuous protection. Leads 10 extend from the sockets to terminals 8 inside a cavity 7 in the boss. A tube 15 is provided for leading the feeder into the cavity and a cover plate 14 fitting into a groove 12 seals the end of it. In practice it is proposed to mount the flexible coupling member inside a rigid supporting metal casing which may be in two halves as shown. Grooves such as 16 or 20 may be provided in the casing for retaining the elements in co-linear or V relationship. The central coupling member may be provided with three or four sockets instead of two and a four socket coupling is described with reference to Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
