Abstract

762,983. Moulding reinforced sheet material. JOHN BULL RUBBER CO., Ltd. Feb. 11, 1955 [Feb. 11, 1954], No. 4005/54. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VIII] A method of manufacturing coated cord fabric comprises the continuous successive steps of applying a coating to warp cords, feeding the cords in spaced relationship for each to enter a groove in co-operating pressure rolls which define between them a space adapted upon the application of pressure by the rolls upon the coated cords, to urge the coatings to flow laterally and cause them to coalesce, and pressing the continuous web so formed to make it smooth. As shown in Fig. 1 metallic or textile cords 7 are fed through an extrusion head 8, from which they emerge with a coating which may be a compounded or pure polymer. The coated cords divide into two groups 10 and 11 which pass over grooved guide rolls 12 and 15 and then pass together between grooved pressure rolls 13 and 14 under the action of which the coatings of adjacent cords are forced to coalesce so that a continuous, longitudinally corrugated web W emerges and is passed to smooth calendar rolls 16, 17 and 18 which remove the longitudinal corrugations to make the web smooth and flat. The extrusion head 8, as shown in Fig. 3, comprises a pair of coaxial discs 19 and 20, the latter having a central axially-directed port 22 through which the coating material is forced into a transfer chamber 23 which, at its periphery, opens into a coating chamber 24. Each cord 7 enters the coating chamber 24 through an entrance opening 25 and leaves, carrying a coating 9, through a coaxial exit opening 26. The openings 25 and 26 are spaced equally about a pitch circle concentric with the discs 19 and 20. The pressure rolls 13 and 14 as shown in Fig. 6 have deep grooves 28 which are arranged one half pitch out of phase, and which, when pressed together, define between them a space into which the coatings around the cords 7 are forced to coalesce with the coatings of adjacent cords and form flank portions 31 of the longitudinal corrugations of the continuous web W.
