Abstract
762,973. Electrical component assemblies. TELEPHONE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. Jan. 26, 1955 [Dec. 17, 1953], No. 35192/53. Class 40(5) A chassis unit comprises a sheet of insulated thermoplastic and/or thermo-setting material into which wires are sealed under the action of heat and pressure, portions of the wiring projecting through one face of the sheet to provide terminals for the connection of components, and the sheet being sufficiently rigid to support the components so connected to the terminals. A sheet of thermo-plastic material A, Fig. 1 formed with a large number of holes is placed in a mould, Fig. 4, with wires interconnecting some of the holes, and a further thermoplastic sheet B is placed above the sheet A and the wiring, the whole being compressed by the upper plate D of the mould and simultaneously heated to a suitable temperature to form a single unit of thermoplastic material in which the wires are embedded. As shown in Fig. 4, the wires are twisted to form terminals which project through selected holes so that after forming the plate appears in section as shown in Fig. 5 with short lengths of wire projecting through nipples a<SP>1</SP> to form terminals v to which components may be connected. Two metal brackets e of which one is shown in Fig. 4 are embedded between the plates A and B and serve to attach the chassis to a front plate extending perpendicular to the plane of the chassis. A strip p comprising a large number of holes is inserted in the mould together with the sheets A and B so that after the moulding operation it is attached to one edge of the chassis. The ends of the wires interconnecting the holes on the plate A pass through the holes on the strip p which thus serves as a terminal board for the wiring embedded in the chassis. This is indicated in Fig. 1 wherein the strip p is shown co-planar with the sheet A instead of perpendicular thereto forclarity. Figs. 6 and 7 show respectively plan and side views of the assembled chassis having components mounted thereon and bolted to a front panel comprising insulating plates t<SP>1</SP>, t' between which is placed a metal plate t<SP>3</SP> forming the lid of a screening can into which the entire unit may be inserted. Fig. 8 (not shown) illustrates an alternative construction of chasis, which is of cranked form for convenience of assembly, in conjunction with other similar units. As an alternative to the construction described, either plate A or plate B may comprise preformed thermo-setting material. In a further modification either plate A, plate B or both plates may initially comprise uncured thermo-setting materials, the curing process being carried out during the moulding operation. Resinous adhesive materials and/or plasticisers may be used to facilitate bonding of the plates A and B.
