Abstract

A tinting composition suitable for addition to both oil-thinned enamel paints and water-thinned emulsion paints comprises a water-insoluble pigment; a surface-active agent at least a part of which is a non-ionic alkyl or alkyl phenoxy polyoxyalkylene alkanol containing from 8 to 50 oxyalkylene groups which are either ethylene or propylene oxide and the terminal alkanol group contains 2 or 3 carbon atoms; and a volatile keto-alcohol solvent for said surface-active agent miscible in water. Up to 9090 of the total surfaceactive agents present may be an anionic agent Yx RSO3M where R is a benzene or naphthalene group, Y is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 3 carbon atoms when R is naphthalene and from 3 to 12 carbon atoms when R is benzene, M is an aliphatic or cyclic water-soluble amine residue containing not more than 6 carbon atoms, x is 1 to 3, and the molecular weight of the compound is from 300 to 450. In general the pigment comprises 35 to 60 per cent the non-ionic surface agent comprises 5 to 30 per cent and the keto-alcohol from 15 to 50 per cent by weight of the composition. Typically the pigments may be one or more of titanium dioxide, lemon or light chrome and lead chromate yellows, molybdate orange, iron brown, red iron oxide, low oil absorption ferrite yellow, Permansa green, phthalocyanine blue, and lamp black with "inert" pigments such as china clay, bentonite, and finely divided calcium carbonate of particle diameter 0.1 to 0.5 micron. The non-ionic surface-active agent may be octyl, iso-octyl or nonyl phenoxy polyoxyethylene ethanols having about ten ethylene oxide groups or the monobutyl ether of polyoxypropylene polyoxyethylene ethanol of molecular weight about 2800 while the anionic surface-active agent may be isopropylamine salts of dodecyl benzene or diisopropyl naphthalene sulphonic acids, or the cyclohexyl salt of isopropyl naphthalene sulphonic acid. The keto-alcohol used is diacetone alcohol and up to 50 per cent of this solvent may be replaced by mineral spirits or solvent naphtha, especially when phthalocyanine blue or lamp black is used, to aid dispersion unless only the minimum possible amount of surface-active agents are used. The tinting composition may be readily dispersed in paints containing oil-modified and styrenated alkyd resins, styrenated oil emulsion paints and oil in water emulsion paints.
