Abstract

<PICT:0762190/IV(a)/1> The uniformity of continuous filaments produced by spinning is tested by determining the bi-refringence of the filament and adjusting the spinning conditions to compensate for variation on bi-refringence. The invention is based on the fact that the tenacity of the drawn filaments is related to the bi-refringence. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, light from a mercury arc lamp 4, modulated at 100 cycles/sec passes through a red filter 5, is polarized by a Nicol prism 6 and falls on a filament 7 of polyethylene terephthalate at 45 DEG to the plane of polarization. The light then passes through a crossed Nicol and is received on an eleven-stage photo-multiplier 9 and recorded by an A.C. voltmeter 10. Under these conditions the output of the voltmeter representing the intensity of the transmitted light is a function of the bi-refringence. The Specification states that when the threads are made by forcing a melt through small orifices in a spinneret by a gear pump and leading away the filaments by a wind-up device the bi-refringence may be changed by altering the feed of the wind-up device. The gear pump must also be speeded up, however, to maintain the diameter of the thread contacts. In another method of detecting the changes of bi-refringence monochromatic sodium light is polarized by a Nicol prism. The polarized light is scattered by a scattering plate and after passing through a quarter-wave plate is analysed by a rotatable Nicol. The light emerging from the analyser is received on a light sensitive device and the analyser is rotated until the output of the device is a minimum. A ribbon of filaments of polyethylene tetraphthalate then replaces the scatter plate and the extinction angle of the analyzer is measured. A comparison of the two values indicates the bi-refringence of the threads. The light-sensitive device may be replaced by a microscope and the extinction position determined visually.
