In a digital computing machine binary numbers are stored in an interlaced manner on a drum, the binary words ARTIST, BUFFER, CONVOY, and DECIDE being stored as shown in Fig. 2, reading anti-clockwise, and a combined binary counter and shifting register is provided for adding at least two-of the numbers as they are read from the drum. For the addition of two numbers as shown, gates G<SP>1</SP>, G<SP>2</SP> and G3 are suitably controlled by control pulses read from the drum by a head 23, so that only the digits of the selected words pass through the gates G<SP>1</SP> and G<SP>2</SP> from the reading head 22 and so that the digits of the sum, each of which is stored by a flip-flop ST for one sector time, are recorded in a selected position on the drum. As the lowest order (2‹) digits of the selected words to be added are read they are passed to a binary counter AD, the contents of which are shifted one stage in the direction of decreasing significance at the end of each sector time, the least significant digit being passed to the flip-flop ST and the remaining digits (if any) . acting as carry digits. In this way addition of two or more numbers takes only one revolution of the drum and no auxiliary storage devices are needed.
