A net-making machine comprises a series of axially-rotatable hooks 18, one for each strand, which manipulate the strands to knot them together, a selected one of them being shrouded by a removable sleeve 28 which has a strand manipulating hook 29 and is arranged for rotational movement different from that of the hooks 18 so that, while these hooks 18 form knots, the sleeve causes its strand 14 or 138 to be looped to or passed through a loop in an adjacent strand, without being knotted therewith. The resultant net is thus formed in two pieces joined by a removable unknotted strand. The sleeve 28 bears a pinion 33 at a level different from that of pinions 31 borne on the hooks 18 and rotated by a rack 32, so that it may be rotated independently thereof. This independent rotation may be effected in any one of the following ways, namely (a) by a rack slid longitudinally in one direction, on a bar 20 carrying the hooks 18, by a face cam acting through suitable linkwork, and returned by a spring; (b) by stepping a rack 34<SP>1</SP> to the right, Fig. 11, by a pawl 86 actuated by a solenoid 80, until a holding pawl 92 is tripped by energization of a solenoid 82 and, through a tail 96, itself trips pawl 86, so that the rack may be returned by a spring 44<SP>1</SP>, or (c) Fig. 14, by a gear 122 racked round by a ratchet 118 and pawl 110 actuated by an hydraulically-operated piston 108.
