Abstract

761,187. Elastic-fluid turbines; centrifugal compressors. GARRETT CORPORATION. Aug. 12, 1954 [Sept. 11, 1953], No. 23426/54. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). A bladed wheel for use with elastic fluids comprises a number of adjacent axially connected rotatable hub portions, each having extending blade portions arranged to be in direct overlapping engagement, in the direction of rotation, with blade portions of the adjacent hub portions. An inward-flow turbine rotor comprises a back-plate 11, Fig. 1, having a cylindrical extension 13 over which is fitted a similar extension 14 of a separate hub 15. Pins 21 are inserted in alternate holes 23 before assembly and are subsequently driven into alternate holes 24 by means of a tool inserted through openings 22 and the unused holes 23, 24. Slight projections (not shown) on the cylindrical surfaces of the pins 21 ensure a tight fit in the holes 23, 24. Blades 12 and 16, integral with the back-plate 11 and hub 15 respectively, abut each other at edges 17 and 18, Figs. 1 and 3, which are disposed at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane A of rotation. The interengagement of the edges 17, 18 damps the vibration of the blades 12, 16. A thick stationary ring 28 absorbs heat from the peripheral part of the back-plate 11, while the inner part of the back-plate 11 is heated by hot working gas entering the openings 22. As a result, thermal stresses in the back-plate due to unequal heating at starting are reduced. When the flow of gas is shut off, the ring 28 radiates heat to the peripheral part of the back-plate 11 and prevents it from cooling too rapidly in comparison with the inner part of the back-plate. A labyrinth seal provided by annular ribs 12b, 12c and annular grooves 29, 30 prevents excessive flow of hot gas along the back of the backplate 11. In a modification, Fig. 6, the blades 35, 36 are offset, with their edges 44, 45 set at an acute angle to each other so as to overlap between the points 42 and 43. The invention may be applied to compressors.
