Abstract
Complex esters, obtained by reacting an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, an aliphatic monohydric alcohol and a glycol or a polyalkylene glycol so that the resulting complex esters do not contain free carboxyl or hydroxyl groups, are contacted with alumina to remove corrosive material and any complex esters adsorbed on the alumina are extracted with a paraffin containing from 6 to 16 carbon atoms and recovered by distilling the paraffin extract. Suitable paraffins are hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, and decane, and mixtures thereof particularly mixtures of paraffins containing from 11 to 14 carbon atoms. The treatment with the alumina and with the paraffin may be carried out at room temperature up to 150 DEG F. and/or for a period of 1/2 to 3 hours. A suitable proportion of paraffin is 1 to 3 volumes (preferably 1 volume) of paraffin for 1 volume of alumina from the above contacting step. A suitable quantity of alumina is 0.1 to 7.0 per cent by weight of the complex ester. In the example a complex ester obtained by reacting together 2 mols. of sebacic acid, 2 mols. of 2-ethylhexanol and 1 mol. of polyethylene glycol having a molecular weight of about 200, using toluene as the water entrainer and sodium bisulphate as the catalyst, is treated by the above process rising hexane and heptane, and mixtures of paraffins having 11 to 14 carbon atom for the extraction step. The use of acetone and isopropyl alcohol for the alumina extraction step is also referred to.
