Abstract
760,877. Vehicle wheels; multi-disc brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Sept. 14,1954 [Sept. 28, 1953], No. 26647/54. Classes 103 (1) and 144 ( 1 ). To provide maximum brake-installation space therewithin, a wheel is formed with a non- rotatable body 10, of major diametric and minor axial dimension of the wheel, carrying on its periphery a bearing means which provides the sole structural support for two tyre-carrying rotatable wheel rim halves 41, 42, a brake assembly being mounted on one or each side of the body 10 within the cylindrical space bounded by the wheel rim halves 41, 42. As shown in Fig. 1, an aircraft wheel body 10 comprises two matched plates 11, 12 integral with, or secured to, brake-carrying hub sections 13, 14 which together define an axle space 15, the plates being secured together by bolts 18. The peripheries of the plates 11, 12 together provide a seating for the inner race rings 31, 32 of a double thrust taper roller bearing, the race rings being clamped against a flange 37 on the plate 12 by a locking ring 39 screwed on the plate 11. The wheel-rim halves 41, 42 are bolted together to clamp therebetween the bearing outer race ring 33 which seats in an annular recess 47 defined by the inner peripheries of the rim halves. Brake assembly.-A series of hydraulic brake cylinders 20 are located in matched openings 21 in the peripheral regions of the plates 11, 12, each cylinder housing a pair of oppositely acting pistons 22, 23, to which are screwed laterally movable pressure-plates 24, 25 respectively. A series of stator discs 60, faced with friction material 64 are slidably keyed into slots 63 in the hub sections 13, 14 and are interleaved with rotating friction elements comprising a series of segments 65 slidably mounted on keys 68 riveted to the underside of the rim halves 41, 42. Reaction plates 70, 71 are keyed and locked on the axially outer ends of the hub sections 13, 14. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 non- rotatable wheel plates 101, 101<SP>1</SP> are welded to an elongated brake-carrying hub 102, and inner race rings 113, 114 of a taper roller bearing are mounted in annular recesses 109, 112 formed respectively in the periphery of plate 101, and the outer periphery of a retainer ring 111 which seats on the plate 101<SP>1</SP> and is bolted to the plate 101. The brake assembly, which may be mounted in one or each side of the wheel, comprises interleaved stator and rotor discs 134, 138 slidably mounted in keyways defined by keys 136, 139 respectively, bolted to a brake carrier 104 on the hub 102 and to the underside of the rim section 121. Non-rotating pressure plates 141, 142 are mounted in the axially outer ends of the keyways defined by keys 136, and are actuated by hollow two-part hydraulic pistons 143, 1431 screwed thereto and operating in a series of annularly arranged cylinders 144 in an end housing 145. Retraction of the pressure plates is effected by springs 151.
