A variable waveguide attenuator comprises a length of rectangular section waveguide 79 dimensioned below cut-off and containing an element 80 of a titanate type dielectric whose dielectric constant may be controlled by a potential gradient set up in the element. The signal is extracted by a probe 81. The various methods of applying the control potential and of matching the element to the rest of the waveguide system are the same as those described in Specification 760,317. Specifications 760,386, 760,388, [Group XL (c)], and 760,389 also are referred to.
