759,036. Angular bending. BRINDLEY, F., and COCKS, G. Nov. 30, 1954 [Aug. 31, 1953], No. 23962/53. Class 83 (4). A pipe-bending machine, comprising a head on which is mounted a rotatable former to which the pipe is adapted to be clamped and around which it is bent, is characterized in that the head is mounted in a support for rotation about the axis of the pipe so that successive bends can be formed in the pipe in different planes and that means are provided for preventing angular movement of the unworked portion of the pipe about its axis during rotation of the head. A head 13, adjustable about its axis in bearings 12 in a pedestal 11 and counterbalanced by a weight 114, carries on a block 18 secured thereto, a peripherallygrooved backing roller 20 and an adjustable block 28 in which is pivoted a shaft 32 carrying a forming roller 33 having a peripheral groove 34 of twice the depth of the groove in the backing roller 20. In operation, a pipe P to be bent is arranged between a clamp jaw 45 on the forming roller 33 and an adjustable clamp jaw 40, on an arm 31 swingable about the shaft 32, and between the rollers 33 and 20 to pass through the head 13 and over a ballnosed mandrel 74 to be held by a collet 98, Fig. 6 (not shown), against rotation about the axis of the unformed part of the pipe. The collet 98 is adjusted along guides 81 to engage a first stop on a bar 85 parallel to the guides 81, to set the axial position of the pipe P for the first bend thereon. The head 13 is then adjusted about its axis and held in this position by brake shoes 110. To effect the actual bending the shaft 32 is rotated, by a handle 65. This causes eccentrics 50, Fig. 4, on the shaft 32, to move the arm 31 and thus the clamp jaw 40 toward the jaw 45 to clamp the tube to the forming roller 33 and then, when a dog 53 on the shaft end engages pins 54 upstanding from the arm 31, rotates the arm 31 and forming roller 33 about the axis of the shaft to bend the pipe around the roller 33. The pipe is then released from the clamp jaws 40, 45 and the mandrel 74 is moved back slightly in the pipe to unstick it by cam means, Fig. 5 (not shown). For further bending, the collet 98 is adjusted axially to abut the next stop on the bar 85 and the head 13 is suitably adjusted. A nest of superimposed forming rollers and a vertically adjustable vice jaw 40 may be used. The backing roller 20 may be replaced by a grooved slipper. The shaft 32 may be driven by fluid-pressure automatic return means.
