Abstract

A method of producing a synthetic latex capable of being concentrated to a high-solids concentration while retaining good fluidity, comprises producing a small particle size latex by polymerizing a latex in accordance with a low-solids recipe, freezing this latex at a temperature below its freezing point, and then thawing the frozen latex, so increasing the average particle size of the latex. Butadienestyrene latex is the specified synthetic latex. The latex may be frozen at low solids concentration, thawed and then concentrated, and the concentrated latex subjected to a freezing and thawing cycle. The pH of the latex may be reduced to a point close to but not quite sufficient to cause coagulation, prior to freezing.
