Abstract

A process for stabilizing the low-temperature viscosity properties of a lubricating oil containing a complex ester comprises adding a minor proportion of an oilinsoluble salt of an organic nitrogen-containing base heating the mixture to above 100 DEG C. and filtering the reaction mixture. The nitrogen-containing base may have the general formula <FORM:0756959/III/1> where R1, R11, and R111 are hydrocarbon groups having not more than 10 carbon atoms, or hydrogen. Examples of salts are guanidine carbonate, sulphate and acetate. Other suitable salts are quaternary ammonium salts having aliphatic hydrocarbon groups containing not more than 10 carbon atoms, and preferably where the anion is carbonate, sulphate chloride or acetate. The salt is added in an amount of 0.1 to 7 per cent by weight to the lubricant which is then heated with stirring to a temperature preferably between 170 DEG and 190 DEG C. The lubricating oil may be a blend of a complex ester and a di-ester, preferably containing more than 20 per cent by volume of the complex ester. The diester may be one having the formula R2OOCR1COOR12 or R3COOR4OOCR13, and the complex ester may be one having the formula R2OOCR1COOR4OOCR3, R2 (OOCR1COOR4)nOOCR11 COOR12, or R3COOR4(OOCR1COOR14)n OOCR13, where R1 and R11 are the residues of dicarboxylic acids HOOCR1COOH; R2 and R21 are residues of monohydric alcohols R2OH; R3 and R31 are residues of monocarboxylic acids R3COOH; R4 and R41 are residues of glycols HOR4OH; and n is from 1 to 6. In an example guanidine carbonate is added to a blend of dinonyl sebacate and a complex ester prepared from nonyl alcohol, sebacic acid and a polyglycol which is mainly tetra-ethylene glycol. The blend is then heated at 180 DEG C. and filtered. Specification 666,697 is referred to.
