Abstract
756,797. Aircraft rotor blades and aerofoils. SOC. NATIONALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS AERONAUTIQUES DU SUD-EST. June 17, 1954 [June 19, 1953], No. 17855/54. Class 4. [Also in Group VIII] A rotor blade for a rotary wing aircraft comprises a tubular spar 1 having a root portion 4 of substantially cylindrical shape embedded within and soldered to a root attachment sleeve 19 to which it is secured also by a nut 21, the portion 4 extending into a tapered section 5 and an extended length 6 of substantially constant ovoid section which may be twisted throughout its length. Sleeves 24, formed by wrapping plastic material reinforced by layers of glass fabric and provided with embedded lightening cores such as 25, 26 of balsa wood are moulded on to the spar length 6. The sleeves which may be moulded with an excessive thickness of material subsequently removed by profiling or moulded initially to the finished profile, are divided spanwise in abutting relationship and they are secured by bonding to trailing edge box members 2 which carry attachment flanges 32, 51b. The members 2 also have lightening cores 49 and they are provided with integrally moulded spanwise webs 7, 8 and dished end closure panels 13. The gap 50 between adjoining edges of the members 2 and the corresponding cavities formed between the dished panels are filled with sponge rubber or cast cellular material which completes the aerofoil profile and permits relative movement between adjoining members 2 resulting from drag distortion of the blade. The leading edge of the blade is protected by sheet metal panels 3 overlapping the transverse edges of the members 2 and the tip end of the spar carries a fish-plate 15 for the attachment of balance weights 17. In a further embodiment, (Fig. 6, not shown), the sleeves 24 and box members 2 are moulded integrally. The invention is applicable to aerofoils other than rotor blades.
