Abstract

755,967. Analysis by neutron beams. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 22, 1954 [Nov. 21, 1953], No. 32342/53. Class 40 (3). The presence of specific atomic elements is detected by irradiating the substance under test with neutrons detecting by means of a scintillation detector gamma rays emitted as a result of the neutron bombardment and analysing the output pulses of the detector to indicate the pulse rate in particular ranges characteristic of the element to be detected. The invention is described with reference to determining the presence of chlorine in a hydrocarbon oil in a pipe D (Fig. 1). A polonium - beryllium neutron source is mounted outside or inside the duct. A thalliumactivated sodium iodide crystal which with photo-multiplier PM constitutes the scintillation detector is separated from the neutron source by a cadmium screen Cd. The output pulses from the detector are amplified and fed to a pulse analyser which selects pulses corresponding to gamma intensities characteristic of the element to be detected and the pulse rate is indicated on meter RM. In the arrangements of Fig. 2 (not shown) and Fig. 3, a probe comprising neutron source S, photo multiplier PM and crystal X surrounded by a cadmium sheath Cd is lowered into a bore hole to determine the nature of the strata surrounding the bore. Since various elements however emit gamma rays having more than one distinctive amplitude, a number of pulse analysers set to respond to different amplitude levels are connected to the amplified detector output. These analysers each operate a recorder. Thus if the first recorder indicates the presence of a peak corresponding to the element the subsequent recorders should indicate the subsidiary peak corresponding to the element. Specification 750,328 is referred to.
