Abstract
<PICT:0755959/III/1> <PICT:0755959/III/2> Apparatus for continuously carrying out reactions with solids in the fluidized state comprises a plurality of vertical reaction chambers 1...7, arranged side by side and in lateral communication through apertures 16 in their walls; solid is fed through pipe 15, successively traverses all the chambers and leaves at 17; fluidizing gas enters at 14, flows upwardly through grid 11, and passes in parallel through all the chambers, leaving at 10. The walls separating the chambers may be of good heat-conducting material and the outside walls of heat-insulating material. Cooling or heating pipes 18 are provided in the separating walls. The height of the fluidized bed in each chamber becomes less as the solid passes through the apparatus; the pipe 17 may extend into the last chamber so as to maintain a given height of bed therein. The apparatus may be used for catalytic reactions, e.g. the synthesis of hydrocarbons or oxygeneous compounds from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, or the conversion of naphthalene to phthalic anhydride, for roasting ores, or for the preparation of oxy-coal by reacting coal with oxygen. Different reactions may be carried out in different chambers by providing single chambers or groups of chambers with separate gas feed passages; for example, catalytic reactions and catalyst regeneration with air, or exothermic and endothermic reactions may be performed simultaneously in the same apparatus. In Fig. 3 (not shown) additional chambers are provided, forming a honeycomb arrangement, and in Fig. 4 (not shown) coaxial rings of chambers are divided by radial walls.
