Abstract

<PICT:0753665/III/1> <PICT:0753665/III/2> <PICT:0753665/III/3> Apparatus for determining the flash point of petroleum products comprises an improvement in the Pensky-Martens Closed Tester to provide a good seal between the cup and the cover, which consists in providing the cover with a number of cam surfaces which co-operate with lugs on a flange immediately surrounding the cup, so that when the cover is rotated on the cup the cam surface will engage the lugs. Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a cup 4 has a cover 1 through which a stirrer 20 and a thermometer are inserted, the cover carrying a spring-actuated shutter 15 by means of which a gas burner 18 is brought into a position in which the gases from the petroleum product in the cup may be ignited. The cover is formed with a peripheral rim 2 which fits round neck 3 on cup 4, the rim carrying a pair of diametrically positioned cams 5, the upper surfaces of which are inclined as at 6. On rotating the cover the cams are moved beneath 2 lugs 7 on a flange 8, thus drawing the cover into firm sealing engagement with the cup. The cams are provided with projections 11 which form stops to limit angular engagement of the parts.
