Abstract

753,620. Copy-milling. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. March 30, 1954, No. 9250/54. Class 83 (3). A copying - machine comprises a support for a pattern 36 and a workpiece 35, a deflectable tracer 46<SP>1</SP> controlling means for moving, relatively to the support, a support 33 carrying the tracer and a cutting tool 46, the tool being carried in a holder movable, relatively to its support, by means controlled by the deflections of the tracer, in a path corresponding in direction and amount to the physical displacement of the tracer contact portion with respect to the tracer support 33. The cutter 46 rotated by a motor 47 is mounted on a slide 44 movable by a piston 56 on a slide 48, which is itself movable by a piston 52 on a slide 40, adjustable vertically by hand or power on the slide 33. The pistons 52, 56 are controlled by valves 72, 93 actuated respectively by levers 78, 80, 81 82 and 88, 98. The sets of levers are controlled by yokes 83, 99 engaging a collar 156 positioned by a ball 191 on the end of a lever 183 pivoted at 184 in a tracer-sleeve 141 and having its other end 192 mounted in a slide 150. The slide 150 carries the tracer 461 and is adjustable to vary the offset or amount of " anticipation " of the tracer. Adjustment of the offset moves the collar 156 and hence the piston 52 to move the tool automatically to a corresponding posi. tion. Thus the tracer 46<SP>1</SP> controls, through the lever 183, the position of the tool 46 on slide 40; it also controls, as described below, the movements of the slide 33, together with the transverse slide 40, and also of a longitudinal bridge 17. Deflections of the tracer 46<SP>1</SP> cause movements of the sleeve 141 about a pivot 140 to move a slide 159 transversely and so displace a valve 163. The valve controls the flow of fluid to the valves 72, 93 and also to valves 168, 177 which respectively control hydraulic motors 30, 34 which, through rack-and-pinion gearing, move the bridge 17 and slide 33. The setting of the valves 168, 177 is controlled by an eccentric cam 109 on a shaft 108 rotated by a motor 112 in one or other direction according to the setting of a reversing valve 115. The motor 112 is energized by the movement of the valve 163 and rotates not only the shaft 108 but also a tracer casing 105 in a direction to relieve the' deflection on the tracer until the valve 163 is centralized as regards its land 129. The casing 105 may be operated manually by a handwheel 136, keyed to the tracer head 143, a selector valve handle 134 then being set in the broken-line position, Fig. 9, so that the motor 112 is non-operative.
