Abstract

A liquid composition comprising a novolak and sufficient phenol to maintain the resin liquid is obtained by reacting phenol and formaldehyde in molar proportions of 1 to 0.5-0.725 in the presence of 0.2-0.8 per cent hydrochloric acid as catalyst at controlled temperatures of 35 DEG -60 DEG -85 DEG C. for 4-5 hours, separating resinous and aqueous layers, and dehydrating the resinous layer under vacuum until a product having a resin solids content of 70-80 per cent is obtained; 1000 parts heated liquid phenol and 600 parts 37 per cent formaldehyde were mixed in a jacketed kettle with a stirrer, cold water being passed through the jacket until the reactants were cooled to 35 DEG C., 14 parts of 20 DEG Be. HCl were then added and the temperature allowed to rise to 50 DEG C. at the rate of half a degree per minute. After an hour the temperature was allowed to rise to 60 DEG C. at which it was maintained for two and one half hours. The resin mixture was brought to a pH of 6-7 by addition of 50 per cent NaOH and triethanolamine or other emulsion breaking agent added. An oily layer separated out which after removal of the aqueous layer was washed to remove salts and then dehydrated under 28-30 inches vacuum at 40-50 DEG C. to a solids content of 78 per cent leaving dissolved therein about 5 per cent water. The resin obtained had a 25 DEG C. viscosity of 57,000 centipoises and may be used for coating particles of sand for use in making sand cores.
