Abstract

751,908. Centrifugal pumps.ALLISCHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. July 2, 1954 [Oct. 21, 1953], No. 19513/54. Class 110(1) In a centrifugal pump, the impeller and the wall of the impeller chamber present opposing surfaces between the suction and discharge, which surfaces are spaced apart to form an internal by-pass adapted to absorb a variable portion of the fluid discharged by the impeller. In the centrifugal pump shown in Fig. 1, liquid can be the passed from the discharge side 21 of the impeller 11 to the suction side 20 by way of a by-pass 25. Vanes 26 help to reverse the flow into the by-pass 25. The by-pass 25 is controlled by a cylindrical valve 28 having an annular lip 31 which, in the closed position shown, abuts the surfaces 23 of the impeller vanes. The valve 28 is movable axially by means of pinions 33 engaging racks 34 and operated through gearing 39, 40 by a handwheel 41. In a modification, the impeller is of the shrouded type and the lip 31 is omitted, the end surface of the valve 28 being arranged to abut the surface of the inner end of the shroud when the valve is closed. In a further embodiment, the impeller is of the double-inlet type with a valve 28 for each inlet. The operating gearing of the two valves is interconnected by a chain drive for operation by a single handwheel. Fig. 6 shows an embodiment in which the by-pass 125 is controlled by an axial movement of the impeller 111. For this purpose, the impeller shaft 112 is journalled in bearings 153 carried by a member 150 which can be moved axially on a bedplate 155 by means of:a screw 162 and handheel 161. Sealing rings 130 are provided between the member 150 and the pump casing 110, and the shaft 112 is connected to the driving means 152 by splines 151.
