Abstract

Condensation products of alkanolamines and long-chain (C11-C22) fatty acids are purified by adjusting the pH of a homogeneous aqueous solution thereof to between 7 and 9, raising the temperature of said homogeneous solution until it breaks into a heterogeneous system comprising an oily phase and an aqueous phase, and separating the desired oily phase from the aqueous phase. The alkanolamine is preferably diethanolamine and the fatty acid is preferably lauric acid. An aqueous saline solution of the alkylolamide is preferably treated, and the pH is adjusted with aqueous mineral acid. The purification procedure is preferably repeated once or twice. The treatment of diethanolamides of lauric, oleic and palmitic acids is described.
