Abstract

751,063. Photographic. type-composing machine. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. July 2,1954 [July 23, 1953], No. 19415/54. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XL (a)] In a photographic type-composing machine in which typographical characters are recorded in sequence upon a film, an electronic image is produced of an entire font of characters the image then being deflected so that the appropriate characters appear visually in the photographing position. As shown, an image of a font of characters 1 which are translucent against an opaque background but may be opaque against the translucent background, is projected on a screen 2a of an image converter tube the inner surface of which is photo-emissive. The electron image thus produced is focused by known arrangement on to an opaque screen 2b having a small area 2c coated with fluorescent material. By means of a keyboard K the deflecting potentials applied to electrodes H and V are controlled so that the appropriate character appears on the fluorescent screen and is photographed on the film 7. Magnetic deflection may be used. Normally the focusing electrodes of the tube 2 are connected to the earthed side of a potential source B by switch 10. Operation of keyboard K changes over contacts to positive taps on source B so that the tube 2 becomes conductive and the appropriate character is displayed for a period adequate for registering on film 7. Contacts 10 then relapse.
