Abstract

<PICT:0751052/IV(a)/1> Tubular films of organic thermoplastic material which have been oriented by stretching are rendered dimensionally stable by inflating a portion of the running film between two sets of pinch rolls, subjecting the inflated portion to radiant heat evenly round its periphery, and maintaining the entrapped gas at constant presure by adjusting the distance between the two sets of pinch rolls. The treatment may be effected continuously with production or as an after-treatment. As shown in Fig. 1, a tube of vinylidene chloride copolymer is extruded downwardly into a cooling bath 12, passed through a warm bath 17 and stretched between rollers 19 and 20 all as described in Specification 656,735. The tube is then passed to rollers 22, the portion between rollers 20 and 22 having air entrapped therein and being subject to radiant heat from a number of axially disposed heating elements 25 enclosed in a cylindrical housing 23. As the temperature of the entrapped air rises, the position of rollers 22 mounted on movable support 27 is adjusted so as to maintain the pressure, and hence the width of the flattened film 32, constant. In an example, a film tubular film of oriented crystalline vinylidene chloride copolymer 14 in. in diameter is passed at 100 ft/min. through a heating chamber containing 15 1800-watt elements, the distance between rollers 19 and 20 being 12 ft. 6 in., additional supporting rollers (not shown) being provided. The product shows a marked reduction in residual shrinkage. Other suitable materials include other vinyl polymers and rubber hydrochloride.
