Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises a lubricating liquid having incorporated therein from 0.01 per cent to 10 per cent by weight based on the total composition of an organic quaternary compound of formula <FORM:0750340/III/1> wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 may be (a) alkyl groups containing from 3 to 22 carbon atoms, (b) aryl groups containing from 1 to 3 conjugated rings, (c) mixed alkyl-aryl groups of alkyl and aryl components as above, (d) alicyclic groups containing up to 3 rings, R1, R2 and R3 may be hydrogen, R1, R2, R3 and R4 may be the same or different, and R5 is an alkyl or alkenyl group containing 3 to 22 carbon atoms. In examples the lubricating liquid is mineral oil and the quaternary compound is phenyl a -naphthyl ammonium laurate. Other quaternary compounds mentioned are those of the series n-octyl ammonium laurate to n-octyl-decyl ammonium laurate, and cyclohexyl ammonium laurate; the corresponding stearic and oleic compounds are also mentioned. The lubricating liquid may also be a hydraulic fluid with lubricating properties (see Group XXIX). Lubricating compositions containing polyhydric alcohol partial esters are disclaimed.
