Abstract
<PICT:0750254/III/1> In gas analysis apparatus for the detection or measurement of oxygen, according to Claim 1 of the parent Specification, the speed of response of the apparatus to oxygen is increased by forming the cathode of openwork structure and interposing a porous carrier for the electrolyte between the cathode and anode. As shown, a glass tube 1 is surrounded by concentric tubes constituting the electrodes and the electrolyte carrier, and the assembly is mounted in a glass vessel formed in two parts 7, 8 connected at 9. The cathode 4 is silver gauze held in position by silver wire 5; the carrier 3 is porous polyvinyl chloride and is soaked with aqueous caustic potash solution; the anode 2 is preferably lead foil, but may also be porous nickel impregnated with cadmium. The gas to be tested is saturated with moisture and enters through tube 10, flows down tube 1, bubbles through a pool of liquid 18, e.g. the electrolyte, and then passes to annular space 14 into contact with the cathode, leaving the apparatus through tube 15. Electric leads 20, 21 are provided for the anode and cathode respectively. Higher concentrations of oxygen are determined by using stainless steel instead of silver for the cathode. An electrolysis apparatus for calibration purposes may be provided as described in the parent Specification and the liquid in this apparatus may be used to saturate the gas sample with moisture. Two or more separate cathodes of different sensitivities may be used with a common anode to provide for different ranges of oxygen concentration. The openwork cathode may be formed from wire mesh, perforated sheet, expanded metal, grids or wires. Other materials suitable for the electrolyte carrier, apart from porous plastics, are filter paper, textile fabric, porous ceramic material, or asbestos. Reference is made to a cell comprising a gold cathode, sulphuric acid as the electrolyte, and a copper anode. The apparatus may be used in connection with the production of oxygen-free nitrogen and argon and the filling of electric light bulbs and radio valves with inert gas.
