749,583. Fire extinguishing GRAVINER MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., WILKINSON SWORD, Ltd., [formerly WILKINSON SWORD CO. Ltd.], and MATHISEN, A. Aug. 26, 1953 [Sept. 1, 1952], No. 21924/52. Class 47 In means for extinguishing fires in which a liquid is ejected from a container 10 by gas under pressure when a frangible seal is broken, the hemispherical seal 17 is broken by an explosive charge 22 which serves also to discharge a portion of the liquid rapidly be- - fore the main bulk of the liquid is discharged by the gas under pressure. The force of the explosion may be directed by a curved surface 19a and the main discharge may be spread by helical vanes 19 or by a mushroom shaped member. The pressure gas may be stored in the container or produced by a cartridge fired simultaneously with the charge 22. In a modification, the elbow fitting 11 is replaced by a straight member. In another form, Fig. 5, for extinguishing fires in a cylindrical tank 43, the seal 42 conforms to the shape of the tank wall. The explosion of the charge 45 is directed by a curved surface 46a and the main discharge by a mushroom shaped member 46: Specifications 638,952, 643,188, 682,988, 702,919, 719,622 [Group XXXVII], 749,597 [Group XL(b)] and 749,618 are referred to.
