Abstract

749,566. Mixing appliances. HOOVER, Ltd. Dec. 30, 1953 [Dec. 30, 1952], No. 36147/53. Class 86. An electric food mixer consists of a base, a pedestal, a power unit affording a driving connection for at least one beater and having a handle, and means for securing the pedestal and power unit in a storage position in which they lie close to the base, so that they can be carried by the handle. In Fig. 1 a pedestal 14 is formed of sheet metal having sides 16 connected by a flat base 17. A power unit 27 has at its rear, trunnions 31 engageable in open slots 32 in the sides 16 of the pedestal. Notches 33 in the rear of the power unit, and co-operating stop pins 34 projecting inwardly from the pedestal sides 16, are associated with the trunnions 32 whereby to secure the power unit either in a horizontal operating position, Fig. 1, or in one or more inclined rest positions, Fig. 2 (not shown). The power unit may be removed from the pedestal. With the bowl 35 and beaters 28 removed, the power unit may be tilted forwardly to lie between the pedestal sides 16 in a storage position, and in this position curved channels 37 in the power unit receive the pins 34 and a locking plate 39 prevents the trunnions 31 from moving out of the slots 32. The base 17 of the pedestal 14 is hinged at its rear edge to the base 10 of the machine. The pedestal 14 is secured in its operative position in relation to the base 10, as shown in Fig. 1, by a spring-loaded releasable catch 22. With the catch 22 released, the pedestal with the power unit nested therein, can be swung into a storage position shown in Fig. 3, wherein the back edges of the pedestal rest flat against the underside of the base 10. In its storage position the mixer is enclosed by a casing consisting of a body 43 and an end cap 44 hinged thereto and secured by a toggle clamp, Fig. 4, (not shown) the casing having a notch 47 through which the handle 36 projects. The machine base 10 is provided with a turntable 12 which carries the bowl 35. In a modification, Fig. 5, the pedestal 71 is adapted to form a casing which encloses the power unit 78 in its storage position. The power unit 78 carries a pivoted cradle 80 having outwardly extending trunnions 83 which engage composite grooves 84, 85 in the inner surface of the side walls of the pedestal 71. The curved open ended parts 85 of the grooves form bearings which support the power unit 78 by means of the trunnions 83, either in the horizontal operative position shown in Fig. 5, or in inclined rest positions, according to the selected engagement of notches 91 on the rear of the power unit 78 with a hook 92 carried by the pedestal 71. The elongated portions 84 of the grooves allow the power unit to slide into a storage position, rear end lowermost, within the pedestal 71, with the handle 98 projecting through a slot 102, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). The pedestal 71 is attached to the machine base 65 by pins 100 on the pedestal which project through slots 99 in the base 65. The base 65 is released from operative position by pulling it forwards, allowing it to be swung up against the pedestal into storage position, Fig. 6 (not shown). The turntable 67 comprises hinged sides 68 which are folded up so as to lie on either side of the power unit 78 in the storage position. A lid 73 on the end of the pedestal is adapted to be closed to secure the parts in the storage position. A cable storage cleat, Fig. 6 (not shown) is provided in the mixer base 65. Modifications are referred to wherein the trunnions may be carried by the pedestal and arranged to engage downwardly facing curved notches in side plates or flanges secured to the sides of the motor casing.
