[Also in Groups XVI and XXII] An apparatus for transporting and processing coils of material in strip, web or filamentary form carried upon spools comprises stationary input and output banks of one or more arbors for accommodating spools carrying unprocessed and processed material respectively, an uncoiling drum arranged to receive a spool, a movable input arbor on a first transfer carriage for transferring a spool from an arbor of the input bank to the uncoiling drum, a coiling drum for receiving an empty spool, processing apparatus drawing material from the uncoiling drum and delivering it to a spool on the coiling drum, a movable output arbor mounted on a second transfer carriage and arranged to transfer a spool from the coiling drum to an arbor of the output bank, a first reservoir of spools which receives empty spools from the movable input arbor and a second reservoir of spools which delivers spools to the movable output arbor, the spools carrying material only being moved when supported on arbors. As shown, coils of strip material, wound on spools, are loaded on to arbors 48, 49 and 50 by a truck 78 carrying a similar arbor 80 having a stripper plate 81 for sliding coils axially off the arbor. A carriage 68, slidable along rails 69, can be positioned axially in alignment with each arbor 48, 49 and 50, such that the coils thereon may be slid axially on to an arbor 70 by operation of stripper plates such as 89. The carriage 68 supporting a coil on the arbor is brought into axial alignment with an uncoiling drum 43, such that the coil may be slid off the arbor 70 on to the drum 43. The material is then passed through processing means which, as shown, is a rolling machine having rollers 14 driven by a motor 17 and transmission unit 18. The material is then rewound on a reel supported on a coiling drum 21, the initial turns preferably being formed by a wrapping means, not shown. Completed coils are removed from the drum 21 to arbors 56, 57 and 58 by a carriage 73 having an arbor 75 and operated in the same manner as the carriage 68 and arbor 70. Empty reels are removed from the uncoiling drum 43 to the arbor 70 and then positioned opposite a conveyer 65 which carries them away from the rails 69, such reels being then transferred to a conveyer 67 moving in the opposite direction from where they are transferred to the drum 21 as required. The truck 78 may, if desired, transport coils from the arbors 48, 49 and 50 to the drum 43 and similarly from the drum 21 to the arbors 56, 57 and 58, thus dispensing with the carriages 68 and 73. Instead of rolling strip metal the processing may be finishing, dyeing, or printing of textile webs, calendering or printing of paper webs, or processing filamentary material, e.g. wire, textiles, or rope.
