Abstract

A distilling column or pressure vessel formed from synthetic resin, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene, which does not retain its shape at an elevated temparture or under high pressure, is provided with an armour of corrosion-resistant material which is such that it can be applied to the column and brought into a condition in which it acts as an armour at a temperature below 140 DEG C. but which, when in the condition in which it acts as an armour, has a softening point exceeding 140C. The armour is applied by casting, lapping, spraying or braiding and may comprise (a) cast resins such as unsaturated polyester resins free from solvents, resins based on cyclic polyester acetals and resins belongin to the group of ethoxylin resins such as Araldite (Registered Trade Mark), (b) a resin applied in solution form to a fabric tape, the column being lapped with the impregnated tape and the resin set, and (c) a braid comprising filaments of resin in combination with a textile material. The resin may incorporate a neutral filler such textile, glass or asbestos fibres or finely ground silicic acid; alternatively, an inorganic substance such as water glass alone or in combination with textile, asbestos or glass fibres may be used for the armour.ALSO:Filter apparatus formed from synthetic resin, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene, which does not retain its shape at an elevated temperature or under high pressure, is provided with an armour of corrosion-resistant material which is such that it can be applied to the apparatus and brought into a condition in which it acts as an armour at a temperature below 140 DEG C. but which, when in the condition in which it acts as an armour, has a softening-point exceeding 140 DEG C. The armour is applied by casting, lapping, spraying or braiding and may comprise (a) cast resins such as unsaturated polyester resins free from solvents, resins based on cyclic polyester acetals and resins belonging to the group of ethoxylin resins such as "Araldite" (Registered Trade Mark), (b) a resin applied in solution form to a fabric tape, the apparatus being lapped with the impregnated tape and the resin set, and (c) a braid comprising filaments of resin in combination with a textile material. The resin may incorporate a neutral filler such as textile, glass or asbestos fibres or finely-ground silicic acid; alternatively, an inorganic substance such as water glass alone or in combination with textile, asbestos or glass fibres may be used for the armour.
