749,369. Controlling change-speed gear. MASCHINENFABRIK A U G S B U R GNURNBERG AKT.-GES. Feb. 16, 1953 [Feb. 14, 1952; Feb. 23, 1952], No. 4294/53. Class 80(2) A control device mounted on the steering column 1, Figs. 1, 2 of a motor vehicle, for a six-forward speed and reverse change-speed gear, comprises a handle 9, 10 which is rotated on its own axis to move a rod 6 axially through rack-and-pinion gearing 7, 8 and thus, e.g., through links, &c., 30, 34, 36-40 rotate a shift-lever 45, Fig. 7, to engage in one or other of shiftrails 58-61, Fig. 6, and is pivoted in a plane parallel to that containing the steering wheel to rotate the rod 6 about its own axis and, through links 14, 57, 55, 50, 49, slide the shift lever 45 to establish the selected speed. The link 30, Fig. 1, is connected to the rod 6 by means which allow the latter to rotate freely with respect thereto but transmit the axial movement, and similarly the. link 14 is connected to the rod 6 by means which transmit the rotary motion of the latter but allow it to move axially. The shift lever 45, Fig. 7, is mounted on a hollow shaft 41 which can be slidden axially relatively to a shaft 40 by the link 50 which is pivoted to a fixed support 51. The shaft 40 is rotated by the link 38. In a modification, a bevel gear 77 and rack 74, Figs. 8, 9, transmit rotational and axial movement of a rod 71, equivalent to the rod 6, to gears 78, 79 connected through cardan joints 80a, 81a, shafts 80, 81, and cardan joints 80b, 81b, Figs. 10, 11, to gears 85, 91, which mesh a gear 86 on a shaft 87 for rotation thereof, and a rack 89 for axial movement of the shaft. Axial movement of the shaft 87 moves a shift lever 88 to select one of a series of selector rails 84, and rotation of the shaft 87 establishes the selected speed. The shaft 87 is biased by a spring 94 in such a direction as to select the highest speed and the gear 91 is engaged by a spring stop 93 to hold it at a point corresponding to the selected speed.
