Abstract

749,162. Magnetic recording and reproducing heads. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 3, 1954 [June 6, 1953], No. 16453/54. Class 40(2) A magnetic head for scanning signals- and modulating same with a carrier A.C. for subsequent detection, has a magnet having a part comprising two parallel branches of a material with a non-linear polarization characterization and in which D.C. and the A.C. carrier is generated in such a manner that their effect is a null one at the gap, and output winding or windings on said branches imposing an equal load thereon. Fig. 2 illustrates one embodiment in which the parallel branches 4, 5 of the magnet carry coils a and b which carry A.C. from a source G and produce alternating fluxes of an intensity effecting non-linear polarization of the branches 4, 5, the direction of winding being such as to be in aiding relationship to each other but producing a null effect at the gap 3. At the same time, a D.C. bias is produced in the branches 4, 5 from a source V by coils f and g which are arranged in similar self-aiding relationship as with the coils a and b. Coils f and g may be dispensed with if an element of D.C. is introduced by way of source G. When a signal is received at the gap 3, an A.C. modulated signal may be taken from coil d by a grid 6 of a valve for amplification and thence to a circuit 10 tuned for subsequent detection. The amplification stage may be dispensed with if the coil e has an equal load imposed on it, for example, another detector, the two detected voltages being combined, if. required. Fig. 3 shows an embodiment enabling voltages induced by the fluxes to be directly detected. The branches 4, 5 are connected by a bridge 11 and coil h carrying the A.C. which thereby produces opposition fluxes in the gap 3. The branch windings k and l are connected to identical detector arrangements 12; 13 producing D.C. fluxes in the two parts of branch 4 which are equal in value but opposite in direction, thereby producing no D.C. flux in the gap 3 but imposing equal loads on the branches.
