In a strainer having a vibratory screen 32 movable freely in a horizontal plane and connected to a rapidly-rotating out-of-balance weight 23 and having brushes 56 movable towards an outlet 40 for coarse material, the surface of the screen slopes upwardly from one end, at which liquid enters from a shoot 34, towards the other end, which has the outlet 40 for coarse material, and the brushes 56 sweep up the screen independently of the vibrations thereof. A framework 31, 38 supporting the screen has legs 19 the feet of which are suspended from vertical flexible rods 17 mounted at their upper ends in rubber blocks on angle members 14 forming part of a rigid stand 11. Cross-members 20 span each pair of legs and are themselves bridged by a longitudinal frame 21 carrying the out-of-balance weight 23 on a vertical shaft 24 driven through a flexible coupling 25 by a motor 29 through a vertical shaft 26. A worm and sprocket 50 driven by the shaft 26 drive a chain 49 to rotate a shaft 46 mounted on a frame 44 and carrying a chain 55 provided with the brushes 56. The frame 44 is adjustably carried on the angle-members 14 by brackets 42 and the chain passes around sprockets 53, 54 on the ends of a tubular frame 51 having one end carried by a cross-member 52 adjustably mounted on the angle-members 14. Tarry liquid delivered by the shoot 34 on to the screen is swept upwards along it, coarse matter which cannot pass through the screen with the liquid into a trough 41 being discharged down the outlet 40.
