Abstract

747,444. Sheet folding and delivery apparatus. GOSS PRINTING PRESS CO. Feb. 5, 1954 [Oct. 19, 1953], No. 3446/54. Class100 (1). In a delivery mechanism for handling several web sections or products at the delivery end of a printing press a rotatable collecting cylinder 50 includes a series of product engaging elements spaced longitudinally along the surface of the cylinder and mounted for movement between a product engaging and product releasing position, a cam shaft 101 extending longitudinally of the cylinder and having a series of cams spaced therealong adapted to actuate the product engaging elements and means for rotating the cam shaft in unison with the rotation of the cylinder. General arrangement.-A delivery mechanism 30 for cutting, folding and delivering signatures to two delivery belts 31, 32 is fed with six associated printed webs 33 and comprises a male cutting cylinder 34 and a female cutting cylinder 35 having knives 36, 37, 38 and cutting bars 41, 42, 43 respectively. The sheets are then passed to the collecting cylinder 50 having sets of pins 51, 52 ... 55, interspaced with folding blades 56, 57 ... 60. From the collecting cylinder 50 the sheets are taken by two jaw or gripper cylinders 61, 62 having jaws 63, 64, and 65, 66, respectively, and are delivered to delivery cylinders 71 and 75 with which are associated longitudinal slitters 74, 79. The signatures are finally deposited on the belts 31, 32. The webs are printed with alternating products and during " straight " delivery all of one kind of product is deposited on the belt 31, and all the other kind on the belt 32 (Fig. 22, not shown). The arrangement is such, however, that during " collect " delivery, complete sets of both kinds of products are delivered to the belt 31, the belt 32 being inoperative (Fig. 21, not shown). Gripper mechanism.-On the final cutting cylinder 35 (Fig. 2) a series of pin arms 84 are mounted for rotation about an axis 85. Each pin arm carries a pair of pins 86 at its outer end and is provided with a cam follower 88 which engages a cam 87, one cam being provided for each pin arm and all of which are mounted on a rotating shaft 89. The three shafts 89 (Fig. 3) are provided with planet gears 91 meshing with a sun gear 92 which is provided with an integral sleeve 93 telescoped over the cylinder shaft 94 and adapted to be adjustably mounted on the frame of the machine so that the phasing of all the cam shafts may be simultaneously adjusted (Fig. 4, not shown). Similar pin arms 125 are provided on the collecting cylinder 50, the cam follower associated therewith being adapted to engage either cams 103 or cams 104 on a shaft 101,'the cams 103 having profiles causing the pin arms to be retracted adjacent the cylinder 61 only once in every two revolutions of the cylinder 50 for " collect " delivery and the cams 104 having profiles such that the pins are retracted once in each revolution of the cylinder 50, and alternately adjacent cylinders 61 and 62 for "straight delivery " (Figs. 21 and 22, not shown). Each cam shaft 101 is mounted on bracket 110 (Fig. 9) having supporting posts 111, 112, 113. The bracket 110 has an opening 115 (Fig. 13) in which are received a series of plates 116, 117 ... 119 provided with inwardly extending posts 121, 122 ... 124 on which are pivotally mounted the pin arms. For bringing one or other of the sets of cams 103, 104 into engagement with the cam follower 127 the shaft 101 is mounted for axial movement in the bracket 110. The mounting includes a slidable nut 141 and a manually rotatable screw 142, the nut being arranged for axial sliding movement in a sleeve 143. Limit stops 151 and 221 are provided. Each shaft 101 carries a planet gear 105 engaging a sun gear 106 (Fig. 6). The gear 106 is compounded to a gear 160 which is coupled to a further pair of compounded gears 161, 162. The gear 162 meshes with a gear 163 which is stationarily mounted on the machine frame. The ratio of the gears is such that the cam shafts 101 are rotated at half the angular speed of the cylinder 50. The gear 163 is provided with a sleeve 164, over the shaft 102 (Fig. 7) of the cylinder 50, on which is provided a flange 165 attached to a rockable member 166 having arms 167, 168 engageable by screws 171, 172 so that the gear 163 may be rotatably adjusted to alter the phasing of the cam shafts 101. The jaw cylinders 61, 62 each comprise two sets of jaws including a plurality of jaw arms 181 mounted on a common shaft 180 (Fig. 14). The arm 181 has a leaf-spring jaw blade 182 which engages an abutment 183. The arm has a cam follower 184a co-operating with cams 185 on a cam shaft 186, rotated by sun and planet gearing similar to that shown in Fig. 3 but with only two planetary gears. A resiliently mounted cover plate 190 is provided for permitting yielding movement in the event of the sheets jamming, and for covering the jaw mechanism. Each of the delivery cylinders 71, 75 is provided with gripper arms 200 having a cam follower portion 201 (Fig. 17) supported in needle bearings between spaced pedestals. The arms 200 include leaf-spring portions 204 at one end and cam followers 205 at the other which engage a cam 206 mounted on a shaft 207 driven by sun and planet gearing. Feed pulleys 70, 78 are provided for advancing the signature to the gripper cylinders 71, 75, at the correct speed of the release from the jaw cylinders 61, 62.
