Abstract
<PICT:0747108/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0747108/IV(a)/2> Wood pulp of reproducible quality is obtained by cooking wood chips with aqueous bisulphite solution containing excess sulphur dioxide whilst measuring the electrical conductance of the liquor, observing the time when minimum conductance is reached and continuing the cooling for a certain period after such time, as determined by a previous trial run. The process is based on the observation that, notwithstanding normal variations in the composition of the initial liquor, in liquor/wood ratio and in maximum pressure, the quality of the pulp depends on the period for which cooking is continued beyond the point when minimum electrical conductance of the liquor is passed, this being constant for any given wood and given cooking temperature. Fig. 3 is a flow diagram of a suitable apparatus, comprising a digester 1 and continuously operating pump 2. In a by-pass line 3 the liquor flows through a glass tube wherein its electrical conductance is measured. Fig. 4 shows a suitable measuring apparatus, wherein the liquor flows through a capillary glass tube 4 having two gold-plated pieces of copper 5, 6 wrapped round the tube, acting as electrodes. Electrode 5 is connected through condenser 8 to a source 7 of radio-frequency oscillations and the current passing through to electrode 6 is rectified and measured by an automatically recording microammeter 9. The slide 10 and shunt 11 are used to apply bias to the microammeter to vary the scale readings. Examples are given illustrating the constancy of physical characteristics of pulps produced under varying conditions of liquor composition, liquor/wood ratio and maximum pressure when the same temperature cycle is followed and cooking is continued for the same period after the point of minimum electrical conductance of the cooking liquor is reached. The liquors used were magnesium bisulphite solution and calcium bisulphite solution; each containing excess sulphur dioxide.
