Abstract

747,065. Securing coils for dynamo-electric machines; coils for dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 10, 1954 [May 11, 1953], No. 13604/54. Class 35. In a generator, e.g. a large synchronous generator, whose rotor body 1a consists of a large diameter solid steel shaft slotted axially to accept current carrying conductors and at the end is reduced in diameter to allow conductor end portions 2 to extend circurnferentially around such ends to form closed coils, a retaining ring structure for said end portions 2 comprises a retaining ring 3 surrounding said portions 2 and supported by a flange 4 which is disposed on the reduced diameter rotor portion 1b and spaced axially from the rotor body 1a with at least one conductor end portion 2a, 2b at each side of the flange, and a tubular tension member 7 which spaces the ring 3 from the flange 4, surrounds the conductor end portions 2b on the side of the flange 4 remote from the body portion 1a, and has one end connected with the flange 4 and the other end connected with the ring 3 by means preventing relative axial movement. Such means comprise dovetail locking key segments 11 disposed in circumferential slots 12 in the ring 3 and a ring 9 which latter is screwed to a ring 8 located by a radially inwardly extending portion 76 of member 7. A clearance 3a exists between ring 3 and the body 1a to reduce or eliminate the flow of induced current therebetween, and tubes 5, 6 form spacers for the member 7 and electrically insulate the conductor portions 2 from the ring 3 and member 7. The ring 3 is shrunk over the member 7. The structure provides that while the ring 3 takes the centrifugal force of the conductor end portions 2 it is relieved by the member 7 of the tendency to move axially due to thermal expansion of the conductor bars. Radial clearances 9a and passages 4c are provided for the passage of coolant fluid. Figs. 2 ... 4 (not shown) disclose various constructions of member 7.
