Abstract

746,347. Rotary pumps. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. June 25, 1954, No. 18783/54. Class 110(2) One or more pumps 19, 20, used in welldrilling installations, are driven by a number of engines 13, 14, through easily-removable variable-speed transmissions 25, 29, 16, 17 or single-speed apparatus. The transmission 25 is bolted to a base or skid 21 and is coupled to the engine 13 by a shaft 16, power being taken off through a belt drive 26, 27, 28. A separate variablespeed transmission 29 is also bolted to the base 21 and transmits power from the engine 14 through a shaft extension 17 and a rope drive 31, 32 to the pump 20. The transmission can embody any standard mechanism which can give at least two forward speed ratios. The variable speed transmissions may each be mounted on its own base or skid, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the two skids being carried on another skid. Other modifications for the mountings of the transmission casings are described in the Specification. Fig. 7 shows the plant with the variable-speed transmissions removed, the engine shafts 19, 20 being coupled to the pumps through stub shafts 42, 43 and belt drives 46, 47. Base plates A, bearings 38, 39 and shaft 42 are constructed as a unit which bolts on to a skid 21, in the same bolt holes as the two-speed transmission 25, thus facilitating an easy changeover. The other pump 20, is driven by units on a base plate B, similarly arranged. One pump can be driven by a variable-speed transmission, and one through a stub shaft. Specification 607,874 [Group XXVIII], is referred to.
